Making of a Music Video

On Wednesday, March 17th, 2010, Saint Patrick's Day revelers descended on the Fishbon Pescadrome for a guided tour of the fabulous Ok Go Rube Goldberg Music Video. Pehr, a member of the Syyn Labs that built it (http://syynlabs.com), described the process. The requirements were that it had to be interesting, not "overbuilt" or too technology-heavy, and easy to follow. The machine also had to be built on a shoestring budget, synchronize with beats and lyrics in the music and end on time over a 3.5 minute song, play a part of the song, and be filmed in one shot. To make things more challenging still, the space chosen was divided into two floors and the machine would use both. one of this year's top Viral videos. Check it out below:

On Wednesday, June 10th, Fishbon Event Lab operatives gathered at the Pescadrome for an evening of fetish madness. Not the kind you think, this was a celebration of objects anthropologists have identified as "fetish objects." By this they mean objects that their makers have imbued with special intention. Jill began the evening with an overview of dolls from traditional cultures that were crafted to carry emotional and spiritual content. For the rest of the evening, operatives used the supplied materials to create their own "fetish dolls." In two weeks, the dolls will become actors in spontaneous doll dramas to be incorporated in future events.

On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, secret Fishbon Event Lab operatives gathered at the Fishbon Pescadrome to witness a demonstration of the Isadora motion technology software. Marco began by showing the basic techniques and describing the multi-infrared camera setup. After an initial demo of the shadow and motion effects, Lora tested the infrared cameras with fire fingers. The results were amazing and left the assembled agents clamoring for the opportunity to play with the technology themselves. Later in the evening Alex updated the crowd on the Bill Conference (TED for the rest of us) and his Empowerment presentation.

On Wednesday, January 21, 2009, Fishbon Event Lab operatives descended on the Pescadrome for and evening of Shadow Puppet madness. Jill brought a collection of videos by San Francisco shadow puppet meisters, Shadowlight Theatre. Agents marvelled at the multidimensional productions of traditional and contemporary shadow plays with actors, puppeteers, musicians and dancers that are part of the company's repertoire. Later in the evening, Jill brought out paper, cardboard and agents created their own uniquely twisted experiments.

To do this, they used Shoeboxes as tiny theatres and cut images from magazines, added original art, three dimensional figures and other materials until they were satisfied.

Fire+Ice was the second annual New Year's Eve extravaganza at the Fishbon Pescadrome. The totally immersive event featured the work of more than 32 artists working in a variety of mediums. On the entry level was the extensively redesigned Sensorium, Cave Grotto, and Temple of Dashed Hopes. On the stairway was the Magic Forest and Kaleidoscope Live Video Feed. The second floor hosted the Circus Bar, Flourescent Ice Cream Booth and Dance Palace. The stairway to the third floor hosted the Bamboo Ritual Tunnel. On the third floor was the New Hillaryland Lounge.

Developed by Mark David and partner as part of their Ph.D. program at UCSB's Media Arts and Technology program, the project illustrates the futility of war as a solution to world challenges. Later in the evening, Mark David led agents in a hands-on experiment with a series of Surrealist Games developed by artists in the early part of the 2oth century.

On Wednesday, May 28th, Fishbon Event Lab agents created an amazing Sculpture for the third floor stairway entrance to the Pink Lounge. Using leftover bamboo strips from Bamboo WeaveCoachella Music Festival and Lightning in a Bottle, they wove the pieces into a beautiful free form structure that wound its way in an exquisite spiral from the 2nd floor landing to the top floor. When the piece was finished, Dom and Elvi designed lighting to enhance it.

Weaving 20' strips of bamboo imported from Indonesia, the crew, designed and modified on the fly, worked under difficult conditions and produced a spectacularly beautiful for the enjoyment of the thousands of alternative music fans in attendence.

On Wednesday, April 23rd, a team of Fishbon Event Lab operatives travelled to the UCSB campus for a briefing and demonstration by Wes, Graham, Mark David, and Marcos about the Allosphere Project. The 60' diameter sphere is located in a special sound proof chamber in the new Nanosciences Building. With the capability to visualize objects at the molecular level, the project will be outfitted with 14 high end 3-D projectors, an impressive sound system and custom software. The applications shown were a brain simulation which allows viewers to observe electrical activity in the brain with MRI data. Later in the evening, Graham and Wes showed their amazing music and graphics app and encouraged hands-on participation from agents in attendance.

On Saturday, February 2nd, Fishbon Event Lab operatives gathered at the Fishbon Pescadrome for an Electronics Primer taught by Alan with help from Dan. The first session covered basic electricity, circuits and included hands on projects with LEDs (light emitting diodes), switches, and potentiometers. At the end of the session all participants successfully built simple controllers that switched LEDs between several intensities with the two devices.

Nicholas then showed clips of local Parkour-istes flying through Santa Barbara and Mammoth, and took questions from interested Fishboners. Following the Parkour segment, Dominique presented clips from early and more recent Aerial Dance pieces and described the "aerial grid" planned for the Fishbon Pescadrome.

On Wednesday, January 16th, Fishbon Event Lab agents attended a briefing by Alan on the state of Physiological Metrics used by political campaigns to predict how voters will react to campaign messages. Invited by a political consulting group to monitor a selected group of New Hampshire voters as they viewed campaign messages by presidential candidates, the Biopac equipment confirmed that voter reactions tended to be visceral and instantaneous. Following the presentation, Alan attached the same electrodes to Dominique and others to demonstrate how "gut" reactions influenced opinion, sometimes reflecting views that are not revealed in polls and interviews because they are not conscious.

Fishbon Wonderland, the fourth major Fishbon event to be held at the Fishbon Pescadrome kicked off at 9pm New Year's Eve and finally finished after sunrise on January 1st. The eagerly anticipated event was sold out days before and attracted revelers from as far away as Germany to an evening of advanced celebration science. All three floors of the studio were pressed into service as participants chose from a 3-D Blacklight World, Snow Tunnel, Snow Bar with Stilt Perches, Warming Rooms, Sculpture Installations, Snow Palace with shredded snow and Siren Stage and a New Year's Angel who accepted New Year Wishes. The evening was anchored by three perfomances (Brian's Shadow Puppet piece with original music by Monkey C, Ronit's Prelude, and Snow Whyte and the Seven Sirens, a Cabaret Extravaganza with an accordion, tuba, trombone and drum band and a cast of 13)More than 30 artists worked on the project for 8 weeks. The celebration was the best ever.
